the ONLY way to go is western digital mybook/elements external hard drives. they can easily be formatted into MBR/fat32 (with the help of Wd's format utility and gui formatter) you can then use split isos and use huge drives for the ps3. I have a 4tb external myself and it works absolutely flawlessly. split iso fixes every single problem.
When you find it, right click it and quick format using NTFS. This will allow it to be seen by the PC. note that windows will only format hdds in fat32 upto a maximum of 10gb, so dont do that. To format the entire hdd as fat use a program which probably is listed above which lets you do more than 10gb.

This is what i did, and it worked fine. The ps3 has its own backup utility, and it was really straight forward. Your mileage my vary of course.
